Opening Reflection — When the Spirit Begins to Ask New Questions
Lately I’ve been having thoughts about how God forms the human spirit. Not in a doctrinal way, but in a wondering way — the kind of wondering that makes you pause and look at Scripture again with fresh eyes.
I’ve found myself asking:
Does God place the human spirit into new circumstances — even new bodies — until we finally become one with Christ?
I’m not claiming reincarnation. I’m not building a doctrine. I’m simply noticing that Scripture speaks of rebirth, subjection, unity, and God becoming All in All — and I’m trying to understand how all of that fits together.
When Jesus told Nicodemus:
“Unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
— John 3:3 (NASB)
He wasn’t talking about reincarnation. He was talking about a spiritual rebirth — a transformation of the human spirit that allows us to see and enter the Kingdom.
But I keep wondering: How does God bring every human spirit to that place? Especially those who die before ever hearing about Jesus?
The Destination — God Becoming All in All
Scripture gives us a breathtaking promise:
“…that God may be all in all.”
— 1 Corinthians 15:28 (NASB)
For God to be All in All, every human spirit must ultimately be brought into unity with Christ. Not forced, not erased — but brought into willing subjection, the same way Christians willingly submit to Christ now.
The Greek word hupotasso means:
- to subordinate
- to obey
- to be under obedience
- to be put under
- to be subdued unto
This is exactly what believers do voluntarily. So when Scripture says all things will be subjected to Christ, it doesn’t necessarily mean crushed — it may mean brought into alignment, brought into unity, brought into willing obedience.
That is the heart of the Kingdom.
Hints in Scripture — The Spirit and Power of Elijah
There are subtle hints in Scripture that the human spirit may continue God’s work across generations.
One example:
“He will go forth before the Lord, equipped with the spirit and power of Elijah…”
— Luke 1:17 (CEB)
John the Baptist was not Elijah reincarnated. But he carried the same spirit, the same power, the same calling.
It makes me wonder whether God continues forming the human spirit through multiple seasons, multiple assignments, multiple lives — until we become fully one with Christ.
Again, not doctrine. Just reflection.
The Great Order — Christ, Then Those Who Belong to Him
Paul writes:
“In the same way that everyone dies in Adam, so also everyone will be given life in Christ.”
— 1 Corinthians 15:22 (CEB)
There is an order:
- Christ, the first of the harvest
- Those who belong to Him
- Then the end — when all rule, authority, and power are brought to nothing
- And death, the last enemy, is destroyed
This is a process, not an instant event. A divine sequence in which God brings all things — including every human spirit — into unity under Christ.
History’s Warning — When a Nation Follows the Wrong Spirit
Recently I picked up a book about Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a pastor who lived during the rise of Hitler. I didn’t know much about him, but the book drew me in — especially because I’ve been thinking about elections, national direction, and how quickly a people can lose their way.
Bonhoeffer’s birthday is the same as mine, February 4th. That caught my attention. But what struck me most was how Germany’s spiritual condition shaped its political choices.
After World War I, Germany was beaten down, discouraged, and desperate for a strong leader. Hitler appeared to be that leader.
But desperation is dangerous. It makes people follow the wrong spirit.
The Nazis gained power not because the majority wanted evil, but because the nation was spiritually vulnerable — tired, fearful, and willing to trade freedom for the promise of strength.
Bonhoeffer saw it happening. He felt something sinister rising. He watched civil liberties disappear. He watched propaganda replace truth. He watched the dehumanization of the Jews. He watched pastors worn down until they surrendered their convictions.
And he watched a nation follow a spirit that was not from God.
The Human Spirit Under Pressure — Bonhoeffer vs. Hitler
Bonhoeffer’s life shows what a reborn spirit looks like under pressure:
- He stood firm.
- He refused to bow to evil.
- He protected the vulnerable.
- He spoke truth when truth was dangerous.
- He remained aligned with Christ even when the world collapsed around him.
Hitler’s rise shows the opposite:
- A nation following fear instead of truth
- A people seduced by strength instead of righteousness
- A leader driven by a spirit of destruction, not life
History becomes a mirror. It shows us what happens when human spirits are not aligned with Christ.
Why This Matters Today
We live in a world with nuclear weapons, global instability, and leaders who rise quickly. We cannot afford to follow the wrong spirit.
The human spirit must be reborn. Nations must be spiritually awake. People must be aligned with Christ.
Because God is forming us — individually and collectively — into the image of His Son.
Whether through personal rebirth or through the shaking of nations, His purpose remains:
That God may be All in All.
Closing — Becoming One With Christ
I don’t claim to know how God forms the human spirit across a lifetime. I don’t know whether He gives us multiple chances or one. But I do know this:
- God is Spirit.
- We worship Him in spirit.
- Christ is the first of the harvest.
- We are being shaped into His likeness.
- And God will be All in All.
Our role is simple:
Stay awake. Stay aligned with Christ. Let Him form our spirit into unity with His.
That is the journey. That is the destination. That is the Kingdom.
