Salvation From The Wrath of God

In our recent Sunday school class we talked about salvation is by faith and not by works. If you have frequented protestant churches, you will hear this or be made aware of the fact that you can not do anything, you can not work for your salvation from the wrath of God. Salvation is a free gift.

I think many churches give the impression that faith in Jesus is all that is needed to be saved. Some will add that it’s also believing that He paid for, that He made atonement for our sins and that is what gives us salvation.

I do agree with the teaching that salvation comes by faith and not by works but I think that there is something else that is needed along with the faith. I believe that we also must repent. Think about this. I could say that yes I believe that Jesus died for my sins and just leave it at that thinking that this is enough for my salvation. But unless I am truthfully and fully aware of that person that I am and that awareness leads to repentance, how will I ever understand the gravity of what Jesus really did for me? Being aware of that true self shows to us the depth and breath of God's love. Jesus is that unblemished lamb that was sacrificed for the sins of the world, the whole world.

and if they have a change of heart in the land where they are held captive, and repent and plead with you (The Lord) in the land of their captors and say, ‘We have sinned, we have done wrong, we have acted wickedly’;
2 Chronicles 6:37
and if they have a change of heart in the land where they are held captive, and repent and plead with you in the land of their captivity and say, ‘We have sinned, we have done wrong and acted wickedly’;
I have listened attentively, but they do not say what is right. None of them repent of their wickedness, saying, “What have I done?” Each pursues their own course like a horse charging into battle.
Therefore this is what the Lord says: “If you repent, I will restore you that you may serve me; if you utter worthy, not worthless, words, you will be my spokesman. Let this people turn to you, but you must not turn to them.
“Therefore, son of man, say to your people, ‘If someone who is righteous disobeys, that person’s former righteousness will count for nothing. And if someone who is wicked repents, that person’s former wickedness will not bring condemnation. The righteous person who sins will not be allowed to live even though they were formerly righteous.’
But did not my words and my decrees, which I commanded my servants the prophets, overtake your ancestors? “Then they repented and said, ‘The Lord Almighty has done to us what our ways and practices deserve, just as he determined to do.’”
and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”

Acts 3:19
First to those in Damascus, then to those in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and then to the Gentiles, I preached that they should repent and turn to God and demonstrate their repentance by their deeds.
Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God,
The rest of mankind who were not killed by these plagues still did not repent of the work of their hands; they did not stop worshiping demons, and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone and wood—idols that cannot see or hear or walk.
