Where Knowing God Truly Begins

There are moments in our walk with God when questions rise to the surface—questions about how we come to know Him, how He draws us, and how His love reaches us long before we understand it. These reflections often come through Scripture, but also through conversations, books, and the quiet leading of the Spirit. This post gathers those threads into one simple, clear picture of where knowing God truly begins.

1. The Father’s Eternal Love: Where Knowing God Begins

(A simple foundation: God’s love comes first.)

Before creation, before time, before humanity existed, Scripture shows us something astonishing: the Father loved the Son. Yeshua says:

“You loved Me before the foundation of the world.” — John 17:24

This is the starting point of everything. Knowing God begins with the Father’s love, not human discovery. It begins in heaven, not on earth.

In the same chapter, Yeshua speaks of those whom the Father “gave” to Him:

“Yours they were, and You gave them to Me.” — John 17:6

This language points to foreknowledge and choosing—not as cold theology, but as deep, relational love.

2. Foreknowledge and Choosing: Loved Before We Knew

(Relational, not mechanical.)

Many imagine foreknowledge as God looking into the future to see who would choose Him. But in Scripture, “knowing” is relational:

“The Lord knows those who are His.” — 2 Timothy 2:19

Foreknowledge means God knew us as His own before we existed. Paul writes:

“For those God foreknew, He also predestined…” — Romans 8:29

Choosing flows from that love. Yeshua says:

“All that the Father gives Me will come to Me.” — John 6:37

The Father gives, the Spirit draws, we respond, and the Son receives. This doesn’t erase human will or turn life into fate. It simply means our journey of knowing God begins with God’s initiative, not our effort.

3. The Flow of Relationship: Father, Son, Spirit, Us

(How knowing God actually unfolds.)

Scripture shows a beautiful flow of relationship:

In simple form:

God begins it. Yeshua reveals it. The Spirit awakens it. We receive it.

4. Continuing Revelation: God Still Speaks

(Quaker echoes and the living Word.)

Some, like the Quakers, speak of “continuing revelation.” They do not mean a new Bible. They mean that the same God who spoke through Scripture still speaks today. Yeshua said:

“My sheep hear My voice.” — John 10:27

And:

“The Spirit will teach you all things.” — John 14:26

I’ve learned much through the Bible, but also through other writings and voices: books like The Shack, Celestine Prophecy, Braiding Sweetgrass, conversations with others, and quiet moments with the Spirit. These do not replace Scripture. They simply echo the same living God who still speaks.

Scripture is the foundation and witness. The Word Himself is a Person, not a book:

“The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” — John 1:14

5. Judas Iscariot: How God Sees a Broken Heart

(Foreknowledge without coercion.)

Judas Iscariot is often remembered only for his betrayal. But Scripture shows a man deeply grieved by what he did:

“When Judas… saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse.” — Matthew 27:3

The betrayal was foretold (Psalm 41:9; John 13:18), but prophecy does not mean God “set him up.” Prophecy reveals what God already knows will happen; it does not force the choice.

Judas’s tragedy is not only that he betrayed Yeshua. Peter denied Him too (Luke 22:61–62). Judas’s deeper tragedy is that he did not believe forgiveness was possible for him. He saw his shame as final.

Yet the Father sees the whole person, not just their worst moment.

6. Why This Matters for Us

(Resting instead of striving.)

When we see that knowing God begins with God Himself, everything changes. We stop trying to earn His love and start resting in the love that was already ours before the world began.

  • You didn’t stumble into God by accident.
  • You weren’t chosen because you were good enough or smart enough.
  • You were loved before you existed, known before you were born, drawn before you understood.

The Father’s eternal love is the foundation. Yeshua is the revelation. The Spirit is the awakener. Scripture, other writings, conversations, and experiences become places where that same God continues to speak, teach, and heal.

Closing With Prayer

Father, thank You for loving us before we knew You. Thank You for drawing us, choosing us, and awakening our hearts through Your Spirit. Help us rest in the love that began long before our first breath. Teach us to hear Your voice in Scripture, in quiet moments, and in the many ways You continue to speak. Heal the places in us that feel beyond forgiveness, and remind us that Your mercy sees the whole story. In Yeshua’s name, amen.
