The Kingdom Way: When People Only Take and Never Give
The Kingdom Way: When People Only Take and Never Give
There are moments in our walk with God when His Word gently exposes the patterns that drain our strength and disturb our peace. One of those patterns is the presence of people who only take and never give—souls who draw from others without ever offering themselves in return. The Scriptures speak to this with clarity and compassion, inviting us to walk in wisdom, love, and the steady heart of the Kingdom.
The Pattern of a Taker
Proverbs gives us a picture that is hard to forget:
“The leech has two daughters: ‘Give! Give!’”
(Proverbs 30:15)
It is the image of a life turned inward—always craving, never contributing. A taker drains the strength of others while refusing to lift their own hand. This is not the way of the righteous, who “give and do not hold back.”
Wisdom From the Apostles
Paul addresses this same spirit in the early church. Some believers were living off the generosity of others while refusing responsibility.
His instruction is firm, but not harsh:
- “Keep away from every brother who is idle and disruptive.”
- “If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat.”
- “Do not regard him as an enemy, but warn him as a brother.”
(2 Thessalonians 3:6–15)
Paul’s words reveal the balance of the Kingdom:
Love without enabling. Grace without indulgence. Boundaries without bitterness.
How We Walk This Out
Scripture calls us to a wise and steady posture:
- Set healthy boundaries — love does not support destructive patterns.
- Stay tenderhearted — correction is never rejection.
- Require responsibility — each person must carry their own load.
- Give with discernment — generosity is holy, not careless.
Jesus Himself taught us to be “wise as serpents and innocent as doves.” Wisdom protects love from being twisted into something it was never meant to be.
The Way of the Kingdom
At the center of God’s Kingdom is a giving heart.
The Father gives.
The Son gives.
The Spirit gives.
And those who walk with Him learn to give as well.
When someone refuses that way—choosing to take without ever offering themselves—Scripture calls us to respond with wisdom, boundaries, and grace, so that our love remains pure and our strength remains whole.
Closing Reflection
As we follow Christ, we learn that love is not weakness and boundaries are not unkindness. The Kingdom teaches us to give freely, but also to guard the grace entrusted to us. When we meet those who only take, Scripture calls us to respond with a heart that is firm, gentle, and anchored in truth. May we walk this path with discernment, refusing bitterness, and choosing the way of Christ—who gives without measure, yet never allows His love to be misused.
Prayer
Father, teach me to walk in Your wisdom.
Give me a heart that loves freely, but also sees clearly.
Help me to honor You in every relationship—
to give with joy, to set boundaries with grace,
and to reflect the heart of Christ in all things.
Strengthen me to walk in the way of the Kingdom,
where love is pure, wisdom is steady,
and every gift flows from Your hand.
Amen.
