The Rhythm of Oneness: From the Drumbeat to Silence
The Rhythm of Oneness: From the Drumbeat to Silence
When people gather in a circle around a large, resonant drum, something remarkable happens. Long before words are spoken, the unified, booming rhythm acts as a master pulse. It gently entrains our brainwaves, dropping a gathering into a shared state of calm. As nervous systems relax in unison, hearts enter a coherent rhythm, and the boundaries between individuals seem to soften, creating a profound sense of emotional safety and collective presence.
Scripture
20 “I’m not praying only for them but also for those who believe in me because of their word. 21 I pray they will be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. I pray that they also will be in us, so that the world will believe that you sent me. 22 I’ve given them the glory that you gave me so that they can be one just as we are one. 23 I’m in them and you are in me so that they will be made perfectly one. Then the world will know that you sent me and that you have loved them just as you loved me.
Reflection
I have become fascinated with indigenous cultures. I was thinking about the drums they use in their dances and ceremonies and how that all affects the people. I wondered if the drums are somehow tuned, like how instruments are tuned in an orchestra.
Connecting the Circle
When a group gathers around a large Native American drum, the unified, booming rhythm acts as an external master clock. It entrains everyone’s brainwaves and drops them into a collective state of calm. Because everyone's nervous systems relax simultaneously, their hearts enter a unified, coherent state. Their individual magnetic fields overlap and synchronize, creating a profound, shared sense of unity, emotional safety, and collective healing across the entire circle.
The Oneness that Yeshua Spoke Of
The description of what happens in indigenous ceremonies with drums sounds so much like what Yeshua talked about in John 17. In Father God's Kingdom, those who have received the Spirit begin to know Father God and Yeshua intimately. They become ONE and do what is right in the sight of Father God.
Quakerism
Within Quaker meetings, something similar happens. They sit in a circle and through their hearts beating in unison they hear the Spirit talking.
My Personal Thoughts
Bringing together indigenous ceremonies with drums and Quakers' form of silent worship, what would that look like? The drum represents the heartbeat of life. The drums help to bring entrainment between all the people. Their hearts and minds become ONE. The Quakers' silent worship helps to prepare them to get rid of daily thoughts and concerns to hear the Spirit.
So if getting together started with the drum beats and then transitioned into silent worship, would that be a better way to be in the Spirit listening to Him/Her speak? Funny, something that I just learned recently is that grammatically, both the Hebrew and Aramaic words for Spirit (ruach and ruha) are feminine. In the very same way, indigenous people speak of "Mother Earth" as the nurturing, life-giving presence surrounding us all.
Finding Peace in the Storm: Drums and the Agitated Heart
We often talk about peace as a mental concept or a spiritual goal, but for many children—and adults, too—anxiety and agitation are physical states. When someone's nervous system is stuck in "fight or flight," telling them to "calm down" rarely works. Their bodies are simply too overwhelmed by racing thoughts or sensory overload.
Modern neuroscience and trauma research show why rhythm is such a powerful antidote to this. Studies confirm that repetitive, rhythmic stimuli can help shift the body out of stress activation and stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, lowering heart rates and regulating breathing. Furthermore, the human brain naturally synchronizes its electrical rhythms to an external pulse—a process known as neural entrainment. A slow, steady beat can gently guide brainwave activity away from chaotic, high-stress frequencies into calmer states.
Because a large drum's resonant, low-frequency vibrations are felt physically in the chest and bones, it bypasses the busy, overloaded mind entirely. Just as a steady heartbeat calms an infant, an external, rhythmic pulse provides a physical anchor for a chaotic internal rhythm. When someone who is agitated is guided to match their breathing to a steady beat, or simply allowed to sit close to that grounding vibration, the body's frantic pace begins to slow down in sync with the pulse. It brings scattered energy back to center—creating a quiet, grounded space where true peace and stillness can finally settle in.
Prayer
Creator and Guide, thank You for meeting us in our gathering and in our solitude. Quieter of our minds and heartbeat of our lives, tune our spirits to Your presence. As we seek to walk in unity and love, draw our hearts together so that we might hear Your voice and live as one. Amen.
