The Prophecies
Prophecy and Power
Something that has always troubled me is the prophecy circulating among Christians today that claims Donald Trump was chosen by God to be president. This morning I found myself thinking back to the period when Adolf Hitler rose to power — and wondered whether there had been a prophecy about him. To my shock, I discovered that there was.
Bonhoeffer and False Prophecy
From an article in Christianity Today titled “Dietrich Bonhoeffer — German Theologian and Resister”:
“The time is fulfilled for the German people of Hitler. It is because of Hitler that Christ, God the helper and redeemer, has become effective among us. … Hitler is the way of the Spirit and the will of God for the German people to enter the Church of Christ.” — Pastor Hermann Gruner
Another pastor put it more succinctly: “Christ has come to us through Adolf Hitler.”
Just to be clear, Dietrich Bonhoeffer did not say this. He was deeply concerned about what was happening in the churches — these words came from other pastors who had confused political power with divine calling.
How Bonhoeffer Found Me
What surprised me most was remembering how I first encountered Bonhoeffer. In early 2016 my daughter, who homeschools, attended a conference and returned with an armful of books. She set them beside me and said I might enjoy reading some. One of them was about Dietrich Bonhoeffer. I knew nothing about him, but something drew me in — perhaps because he was German, and I come from German lineage.
I began reading and was captivated. The book described in vivid detail the years when Hitler and the Nazis seized power. I couldn’t put it down. After finishing, I wanted to know more and began researching that era.
Echoes in Our Own Time
By the time the 2016 presidential debates arrived, I had learned much about Hitler’s rise. Watching Trump, I noticed unsettling similarities — his tone, his rhetoric, his disregard for restraint. When asked about torture, he said he had no problem with it. His comments about Russia and Putin, and later revelations about election interference, only deepened my concern.
So when I began hearing Christians say that God had chosen Trump, I was troubled. How could they be so sure this prophecy was from Father God?
The Trump Prophecy
My wife recently found the movie The Trump Prophecy and added it to our watch list. When we watched it, my questions multiplied. In the film, the prophecy originates with a retired fireman who suffers from PTSD after failing to save a child from a fire. He experiences nightmares in which Satan appears several times. Eventually, an “angel of light” appears and tells him that God has chosen Trump to be president.
But Scripture warns us that Satan can disguise himself as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14). Could this prophecy have come from the deceiver rather than from God?
A Sobering Concern
Why am I so focused on Trump as president? Because I cannot believe that Father God would want us to repeat the horrors of the Holocaust or the spiritual blindness of that era. Yet from what I see, that is the path we risk taking.
Our Hope and Calling
As frightening as this may seem, we can trust Father God’s plan. He is all‑powerful. Nothing and no one — not even Satan — can prevent His purposes from being fulfilled. Everything will be accomplished.
Until that day when Yeshua Jesus returns, continue in love:
- Love Father God and His Son, Yeshua Jesus, with all your heart.
- Thank Father God for His plan to save us.
- Thank Yeshua Jesus for taking our place and paying for our sins.
- Love all people — even your enemies.
- Pray for them, that all may come to know Yeshua Jesus and His great sacrifice.
