Lying Is a Sin

Unity Series Header Image

Intro: In a world where deception feels almost normal, God still calls His people to walk in truth. This reflection looks at why lying is so serious in His eyes—and why truth matters for anyone who wants to live in His Kingdom.

✦ Lying and the World Today ✦

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately—how rampant lying has become in our world. Consider the Epstein files: a powerful sex‑trafficking ring built on deception. Young girls were lured in by lies, trapped by lies, and harmed because people in power chose dishonesty over truth. I believe strongly that all of this must be exposed.

✦ What Scripture Says ✦

“The Lord detests lying lips,
but He delights in people who are trustworthy.”

Proverbs 12:22 (NIV)

There may be rare, extreme situations—such as hiding innocent people during wartime—where deception is used to save lives. But the overall witness of Scripture is unwavering: God cannot lie, and His people are called to walk in truth.

Lying destroys trust. It attacks God’s sovereignty. It separates us from Him.

✦ The First Church and the Seriousness of Sin ✦

The book of Acts describes the early church—men and women filled with the Holy Spirit, living in God’s kingdom. Yet even there, dishonesty crept in. Acts 5 tells the sobering story of Ananias and Sapphira, who sold property but secretly kept part of the money while pretending to give the full amount.

“You have not lied just to human beings but to God.”
Acts 5:4 (NIV)

Both Ananias and Sapphira fell dead—not by human hands, but by God’s judgment. Their story shook the entire church with holy fear.

This happened in the very first church—the first fruits of God’s Kingdom on earth. In this newborn community, where the Holy Spirit was moving powerfully and purity mattered deeply, sin could not be allowed to take root. God was establishing a holy foundation, and anything that threatened that foundation had to be removed. The judgment of Ananias and Sapphira wasn’t only about their individual lie; it was about protecting the integrity of the Kingdom from the very beginning.

God is the perfect Judge. He knows all things. He knows what is true and what is false. Nothing is hidden from Him. The death of Ananias and Sapphira was not a human punishment—it was divine judgment.

If God detests lying, then we, as His people, must love truth. We must speak truth, live truth, and walk in the light, because truth reflects His character.

✦ Closing Prayer ✦

Father God,
teach us to love truth the way You love truth.
Cleanse our hearts from every form of deceit,
and fill us with the light of Your Spirit.
Make our words trustworthy, our motives pure,
and our lives a reflection of Your holiness.
Keep us close to You, walking in honesty and humility,
so that Your Kingdom shines through us.
Amen.
